What to check before signing
- What is billed on top of the rent.
- What the road to the villa is like.
- Whether there is construction or similar nearby.
- Whether there is parking and where it is.
- Whether there is a backup water tank — some areas have shortages in the dry season.
Where to look for a villa
Bophut and Chaweng Noi offer hillside villas with sea views, close to restaurants and nightlife. More expensive, but you do not have to drive far.
Lamai and Maenam are quieter and cheaper for the same standard of house — a good choice for a long stay with children.
Worth a look too are the less obvious spots: Choeng Mon and Plai Laem — villas near Big Buddha, five minutes from the airport; the south-west with Na Mueang, Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi — waterfalls, sunset beaches and affordable prices.
