Scooter or car
A scooter is cheaper, parks anywhere and fits through the narrow lanes of Chaweng where a car gets stuck. It is what most couples travelling light choose.
A car is worth it in the rainy season, with children, if you live up a hill or do a weekly shop. It costs roughly three times more, but the comfort is not comparable.
Minimum terms differ: scooters up to 160cc are rented from one month, maxi scooters from five days, cars from a single day.
What you need to rent
- An international driving permit for the right category, or a Thai licence.
- Your passport for the agreement — the original stays with you.
- A cash deposit: ฿3,000–5,000 for a scooter, ฿5,000–10,000 for a car.
- A helmet is required by law on a scooter — we provide two.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent without an international driving permit?
No. We do not hand over vehicles without a licence: it is dangerous, and after an accident the full cost falls on you. Getting an international permit at home is quick and cheap.
Can you deliver to the airport?
Yes, we can leave a car at Samui airport car park or meet you at arrivals. We deliver scooters too, though collecting one at your hotel is usually easier. Delivery is charged — the price depends on the area and we quote it when we reply.
What happens if the vehicle is damaged?
Minor scratches from normal use are not a reason to withhold the deposit. Cars carry commercial insurance, which covers most of the repair after serious damage. Bikes are not insured that way: the compulsory policy covers medical costs only, and repairs are paid from the deposit based on the actual damage.
